Review: Lil Kesh ft. Patoranking wonders, ‘Is it Because I love You’

Lil Kesh needs no introduction. The YBNL act already has hits such as ‘Shoki’, ‘Gbese’ and ‘E fe Joku ni’ to his credit. He also played a pivotal role in DJ Jimmy Jatt’s ‘Dayanmo’. As I write, he’s one of the fastest rising young stars in the industry. His latest release is titled ‘Is it Because I Love You’.

The song follows the same style as his previous releases, “rapping” in tandem with the rhythm such that his audience is persuaded to start dancing without even knowing it. Kesh would “rap” for a very short while and suddenly break into a melodious Olamidesque hook that would then usher in the chorus. This style of his is quite unique in an industry where such is no longer easy  to come by.

Nevertheless, he must attempt to become versatile as he becomes more popular. Patoranking brought something different to the tune, thus making his feature a good idea.

As much as I find his style interesting, Lil Kesh’s lyrics could be raw to a fault more often than not. In ‘Is it because I Love You’ however, he restrains from his ribald rhymes and chooses to maintain thematic focus.  Produced by the usual suspects, Young John and Pheelz, this song has the potential of a smash hit.

The closure to the track is interesting as Lil Kesh finds a humourous way to close the song in a manner typical of his boss.
